A La Maison de M. Civecawa, performance poster by Tadanori Yokoo, 1965.
Tadanori Yokoo, born in 1936 and living and working in Japan, is one of my all-time heroes. Back in 1989, a professor at university showed me his work, giving me a peek at what is happening in different cultures. At this time, the library was the only way to see the work of other designers. I spent more time staring at bookshelves, exploring the past and trying to catch some of the present, than I did listening to lectures. I found out that this was a good way to follow my own interests and maybe build up my personality.
“A La Maison de M. Civecawa” is a poster Yokoo designed in 1965 to advertise a performance by Tatsumi Hijikata. I was studying his design and tried to understand how he combined different sources (photography, graphics and references), used color, integrated typography, etc. He made me think... and this was a very important learning process for me. I understood that design is not just the physical act; design is also thinking.
And I found out that you don’t have to show a dancer to advertise a dance performance.
