I’m usually able to look at a video and take an educated guess on how something was made, but "Horde" by the Brutus Collective eluded me. The film features masterful cel and 3D animation, in addition to an eerie stop-motion-like varnish that coats the each scene.
I’ve found it’s hard to cohesively mix mediums as radically as they have. The result feels genuinely fresh. Horde shows a wide range of talent across the several sub-fields that encompass modern animation. And on top of their technical prowess, the group manages to tell a tight, intensely cinematic thriller that keeps me hooked. I can’t wait to see what the Brutus Collective has up their sleeve, next.
