Eric J. Smith is the creative director of Free Range Studios
. Committed to art and design that creates positive change, Eric and the Oakland- and DC-based teams at Free Range use unique storytelling methodologies to create videos, websites and integrated brand solutions for the nation’s most respected socially responsible businesses and nonprofits. During his tenure at Free Range, Eric has directed videos for software company Autodesk, The Kaiser Family Foundation, The Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. A RISD graduate with a multidisciplinary career beginning in the early 1990s as an intern at Tibor Kalman’s M&Co., Eric has held design positions at some of New York’s and Hollywood’s most respected agencies. In 2006, he was tapped to become chief creative officer of environmental public/private partnership EcoMedia, now a division of CBS. In that role he co-executive produced a syndicated television series that gave eco-makeovers to celebrity homes and directed commercials in locations from San Francisco to Tahiti. An avid artist, director and photographer, Eric is a longtime member of the Directors Guild of America as well as of AIGA. Most recently, he served on the jury of AIGA’s 2011 “365 | Design Effectiveness” competition.
