Jim Sherraden

Jim Sherraden is manager, chief designer and archivist at Hatch Show Print, one of America’s oldest surviving show poster and design shops. Since 1984 he has overseen its transition from a cultural survivor to a widely recognized graphic design icon and destination for letterpress enthusiasts. In addition to the countless number of posters he has created at Hatch, Sherraden has contributed to—or has designed—record and CD covers for artists ranging from Bruce Springsteen to Hank Williams. In 1992, he began creating one-of-a-kind pieces of art called monoprints.

Sherraden is the co-writer of Hatch Show Print: The History Of A Great American Poster Shop (Chronicle Books 2001), now in its sixth printing, which received a 2001 Design Award of Excellence from Communication Arts magazine, and was included in AIGA’s “Top Fifty Book Covers.”

In 2001, Sherraden designed and executed a mural for the Conservatory of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the first public artwork to be displayed in that facility. In 2006, he oversaw the installation of a special exhibit of Hatch prints, (including his monoprints) at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In 2007 he coordinated a retrospective of Hatch Show Print for the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), and in 2012 several pieces of his art were included in the Ayers Collection of Tennessee Art for First Bank in Nashville. Most recently his artwork has been included in the textbook Meggs’ History of Graphic Design (fifth edition).

Sherraden is also an accomplished lyric writer, and his songs have been included on multiple award-winning recordings, including Danko/Fjeld/Andersen (Rykodisc, 2001), the winner of that year’s NAIRD award.

Sherraden earned a BA from Middle Tennessee State University in 1983. He is a frequent speaker at universities and professional organizations and conducts letterpress workshops from coast to coast. He has been a printmaker for more than thirty years.
