FIVE YEARS, Catalogue - Colophon

Five Years” marks British type foundry Colophon’s 5th anniversary. The catalogue combines type design, publication design, 3D rendering, and art direction in a catalogue of 26, 3D-rendered prints, each displaying fictional “uses and misuses” of their 26 fonts.

Alongside the catalogue and prints, custom font, Burgess, akin to Times New Roman Bold was also designed specifically for “Five Years,” by the members of Colophon, while the prints were also released individually and exhibited in April 2014 at KK Outlet London.

“The re-presentation of made-up existences for these types, “Five Years,” highlights the role of the type designer as a complicit enabler, passive collaborator, and disembodied author of others' designs and intentions.” —Colophon

This conceptually brilliant project, highlighted and realigned our perception of type designers and their roles, and showcases an incredible synergy of technical skill, artistic ability, attention to detail and experimentation.
