Final poster design for Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Elena, 2011

Nashville graphic artist Sam Smith makes beautifully simple hand-drawn movie posters, like the above, for the Russian film Elena.

Modern movie poster design is usually driven by marketing departments who prefer to use a standard poster template—usually studio photography of the main characters—in order to sell as many seats as possible. So it’s nice to see someone making quieter, hand-drawn posters for film—Sam’s work reminds me of some of Saul Bass’s classic movie artwork.
