Map of New York City, Showing the Distribution of the Principal Nationalities by Sanitary Districts; Frederick Pierce, 1894

This is one of our favorite infographics that shows a significant amount of data with limited formal elements. Population density is shown using progressive textures. Relative numbers of different nationalities are shown within sanitary districts.

Ultimately, both maps seen together can be viewed as abstract compositions that double as multivariate quantitative beasts.
