From Rethink, Canada
Since 2008, Rethink, a creative firm with offices in Vancouver and Toronto, has been working with the Dogwood Initiative to help keep oil tankers out of precious Canadian waters otherwise untouched by the industry for the last 35+ years.
Their Loonie project first caught our eye for its simple cleverness. In an effort to get attention for the No Tankers campaign, they created 450,000 decals that were then adhered to their dollar coin…the loonie. These coins found their way into the hands of thousands of Canadians, helping to raise awareness for the No Tankers site and encouraging people to learn about what was going on and to sign a petition.

More recently they created a poster that was interesting in its execution. In a time where over the last several years it’s been all the rage for designers to create a poster to help raise money or awareness (in complete disclosure—we’ve participated in several), this campaign was simply smart and got the point across. The concept was to show how oil spills affect everyone, so Rethink placed these posters—made with environmentally friendly, water-soluble ink—above wild postings around Vancouver. When it rained, the ink bled onto posters below.
Some think it’s great conceptually; others think it’s design show fodder….what do you think?
