The Bay Lights: Leo Villareal

Tuesday night was the premiere of New York–based artist Leo Villareal’s newest project, The Bay Lights. This massive LED installation illuminates the entire space between the deck and signature peaks of suspension cables that fill out the iconic silhouette of San Francisco’s Bay Bridge.

Karolina Sobecka made this compelling digital “mirror” using facial recognition software to display an animal-equivalent head to match your face and mimic your expressions. Having recently finished a face recognition game, we not only appreciate how responsive the software seems but its attempt to engage one’s “empathy” neurons.
