Reflectance printing makes 2D objects handle light like 3D

This is more on the techie side of design, but I was blown away by this type of paper—being developed by a group of researchers from HP, UC Santa Cruz and 3M—that allows a 2D printed object to react to light in the same way that the object represented in the image would in real life.

It’s called reflectance printing, and it works by creating tiny divots in the paper that can be printed to mimic the way light would reflect on the object itself.

This could seriously change the way retailers, OOH advertisers and designers create signage. Very cool!
