I f***ing love outer space, all those planets and stars and s***. Maybe that’s why I f***ing love this series of animated images.

Two years ago, I met Ignacio Torres, a young photographer originally from El Paso, Texas who now lives in New York. He is a lovely, smart and charming young man, who is incredibly talented. My favorite of his works is the Stellar series, a personal project he shot in Texas while exploring the medium of stereoscopy via animated gifs. This gives his work a certain three-dimensionality, depth and narrative, like small, short films. Every single one of these images is telling a story, serving as a visual metaphor of the theory that mankind is made of cosmic matter as a result of a star’s death. Bathed in heavenly light, the models are seemingly suspended in mid-air as the wonders of the galaxy pass them by.

Every week Ignacio would gather a group of friends and drive to the middle of nowhere to shoot his subjects with a standard digital SLR camera from four different angles, taking the pictures all at the same time with a synched flash. Dust and reflective confetti thrown at the models created the galaxies.

I value the craft behind interesting work. This is not simple in any part to create, and results in a fantastic experimental project going beyond the preset borders of photography.

this is amazing! I love the subtle movement of the images & the glitter as the galaxies adds a nice touch.
