The Solar System shirt

Are you freaking kidding me?! This was the first thing that came out of my mouth when I saw this children’s tee illustration. This Solar System Tee has got to be one of the coolest representations of our galaxy in our galaxy. Brent Couchman, a good ol’ boy in San Francisco, was approached by Made By Wolf to create this beauty, and he definitely delivered.

Brent Couchman is an incredibly talented (or should I say incredibly hardworking) designer and illustrator with a knack for the vintage. Everything he seems to touch turns out to be beautiful and charming. His style merges both modern and vintage, and he has an impeccable sense of color. All of this combined sets him apart from many designers I’ve come across as of late. I guess that’s why he was crowned one of the ADC Young Guns last year.

Aside from the nice custom type and fun illustrative maps and posters, one particular project of his stood out to me. The Solar System Tee (designed for Made By Wolf) is one of the coolest representations of our galaxy I have yet to see. Brent’s style, the use of color and textured shapes, broken up by beautifully crafted icons and geometric elements, all work together in perfect harmony. Not only is the design hip and cool, but educational, too! I especially love the little details, such as Pluto frowning, sad it is no longer a planet. If he were to have picked out one or two elements to create the shirt from, it would’ve been awesome. Most of us would shy away from adding so much detail into shirt design, but not Brent.

Brent, I doubt I will ever be able to lose enough lbs to fit into one of these kids’ shirts, so do me and everyone else a favor, and print out some beefy tees. For the time being, I’ll just have to buy one for my daughter. Who wouldn’t want their son or daughter to be the coolest kid in school? Or at least the coolest looking kid? Or perhaps just the kid with the coolest shirt? You can start right now by buying one at the Wolf Tees online store.

Agreed. Count me in for one if they come out in adult size!

While I appreciate the engaging illustrative approach, I’m bothered that the elements, particularly the planets, are not at all to scale. (Earth is definitely not 50% of the size of Jupiter.) And there’s nothing representing the distance of each planet to the sun. While I realize it’s not as engaging to have a giant sun with specks for the smaller planets, some representation of the actual relationship between the elements would have made this much stronger.

dude…its a children’s shirt illustration. It’s meant for pure enjoyment.

If I just saw this on the street I’d agree, but it’s posted on an AIGA website with an article that states, “Not only is the design hip and cool, but educational, too!” With that in mind, I think it’s completely legitimate to critique it from a design perspective.

The sun also doesn’t really have a smiley face on it. I think you are missing the mark on this one. It’s a fun shirt, not an illustration for National Geographic.
