I love how this music video by Dan Deacon and Ben O’Brien celebrates the creativity that comes from working with constraints. The idea is simple: those two built a set and filmed a short scene in it. Then another two people watched that scene and had to recreate it from memory in an hour. Then two more people watched that and recreated that, and so on. The result? Beautiful craziness.

As designers, a big part of what we do is figuring out rules. We also have to follow them. And sometimes we break them. In this project, everybody tries to follow the rules, but each version gets worse and worse. Of course they also get better and better, as memory fades and instinct takes over. The rest of us are rewarded with joy that’s both infectious and inspiring.
