The little sticker that started a worldwide phenomenon.

What started with 100 stickers and a simple message has grown exponentially over the last 10 years, building a worldwide community half-a-million stickers strong.

Throughout this week on Design Envy, each of our posts will feature an aspect that we value greatly within our studio. Today’s post speaks to community.

The You Are Beautiful project was started by Matthew Hoffman more than 10 years ago as a way to create a positive, affirming message with a simple, silver sticker. After Matthew found that the first batch of 100 stickers was so well received, he decided to create a one-page website and allow anyone to send him a self-addressed envelope to request stickers.

People who sent in for a pack of 10 free stickers would post them around their community and send photos back to Matthew. He quickly found that the stickers were ending up everywhere from Amsterdam and Mongolia to Vietnam and the Great Wall of China.

While Matthew was the originator of the sticker and continues to divvy them up (now for a few bucks), the project is way bigger than one single person. It’s a community that has spread three words to every continent across the globe. Through the new expanded website, you can post your photo and tag your location to the ever-expanding Google map. If you prefer, you can tag your photo with #yabsticker on Instagram and join the community that is nearly 30,000 strong.

This was the first large scale installation. It lasted only an hour before it was nabbed.

The message has spread across the globe, including this display in Germany (NKF—published by You Are Beautiful)
